  • April 23, 2026, the most recent confirmed event, again involving underground drainage infrastructure

That's not an every-few-decades anomaly. It's a site that has gone active at least nine documented times in under 250 years, with a noticeable acceleration in the last two decades. Fire officials in past incidents have put the frequency even higher, describing periods when the vent smolders quietly on a near monthly basis without ever producing visible flame.

The Pattern Underneath the Pattern

Here's the part that generic coverage of "the volcano" tends to skip: the flare-ups aren't evenly spaced by season or by year. They cluster around erosion.

The 2006 event is the clearest case on record. Boles and other UCSB scientists traced that outbreak directly to a bluff slide that exposed buried, already-heated hydrocarbons to fresh oxygen, then let strong sun push the shale past its flash point.
